Part 2: You will hear a talk giving information about a Street Tree Planting Programme in the Riverside district.
Good morning everyone, and thanks for coming to this session about our Street Tree Planting Programme. I’m Laura Bennett, the Urban Greening Coordinator for the City Council.
Before we look at the map, let me give you some background. Riverside wasn’t always residential. It was once known for its market gardens, supplying vegetables to the city. Over time the area has been built up, and last summer’s heatwave made it clear that many streets here need more shade and better walking routes. That is why we’re starting this programme now, to improve the local environmental conditions. It’s a project running over the next three months, during which we’ll plant 120 new street trees across the district.
You might wonder why we aren’t planting evenly on both sides of every street. For example, on Market Road, new street trees will only be planted on the eastern side. This is because the western side contains underground utility lines, and we cannot risk damaging them.
As for the schedule, work will begin in the North Park Area. We are planning to start there on Monday the 12th of June, which is mid-June, and that will continue for about two weeks.
Now, if you look at the map, you’ll see three zones: the North Park Area at the top left, the Central Market Area at the top right, and the Riverbank Zone at the bottom.
Let’s begin with the North Park Area. Oak Street runs along the top, with First Avenue on the left and Third Avenue on the right. You’ll see the flower garden in this zone, positioned just to the west of First Avenue, close to Oak Street. The main planting here will be along Oak Street, and you can see the section for new trees on Oak Street, especially between First Avenue and Third Avenue.
Next, move across to the Central Market Area. Market Road runs north to south through the middle. On the left-hand side of Market Road is the café. On the eastern side, at the top, is the public library, and directly below it is the town centre. In the small square between these buildings, two larger shade trees will be added.
Finally, look down to the Riverbank Zone. Riverside Walk follows the curve of the river. Trees will be planted along this walkway and spaced every 20 metres to keep the views open. Just above the walk is the children’s playground. Next to it you’ll see a star symbol marking the demonstration site, where we’ll show residents how roots are protected using underground barriers.
After the North Park area, the crew moves to the Central Market Area at the end of June. Planting in the Riverbank Zone is planned for mid-July. All work will take place on weekdays between 8 am and 4 pm.
You may notice temporary parking restrictions while work is underway. Advance notice signs will be posted at least five days before planting starts on a street, and access to homes and shops will be maintained throughout.
If you’d like to get involved, we’re holding a Community Planting Day on Saturday the 24th of June in North Park. Volunteers will receive basic training from our horticultural team. Gloves and tools will be provided, but please wear closed shoes and bring a hat.
