Part 2: You will hear a member of staff giving a short talk about changes at a public library and guiding visitors around a floor plan.
Hi everyone. I’m Martin from visitor services at Northgate Library. Just to avoid confusion, today isn’t about membership payments or volunteering. It’s simply a quick briefing on how you can still use the building during the renovation, and then I’ll guide you through the floor plan so you can find the key areas.
So why are we changing the layout? Some people assume it’s mainly because the children’s area needs expanding, and we are improving that later, but that’s not the core issue. Others say it’s the heating, which can be unreliable in winter, but again, that’s not what triggered this redesign. The real reason is crowding at the entrance. At busy times people stop just inside the door to return books, check their phones, or wait for help, and the main route through the building becomes blocked.
Most services will continue. Borrowing books will remain open, and returns will stay available too, in fact, we’re adding extra drop slots. However, printing and photocopying will be unavailable for the first two weeks. We considered keeping one machine running, but the wiring work means that whole section has to be switched off.
People have also asked how we’re paying for the Digital Studio equipment. At first we thought we might cover it through room-hire income, sorry, I should say that was one suggestion, but the equipment is actually funded by a national grant that was approved earlier this year.
And the Saturday workshops: they won’t be cancelled, and they won’t be online-only. Instead, they’ll move to another building nearby, the community centre across the road, until the renovation is finished.
Before I talk you through the map, one important rule for today’s walk-through: please stay with the group. Some routes are temporarily narrowed, and it’s easy to take the wrong turn.
Now, look at the floor plan. You are at the entrance at the bottom, and the main walkway runs straight up the centre. The self-service returns are in area A, just inside the building along that central route.
First, the IT Help Desk. Walk forward from A along the main walkway. You might expect it to be on the left-hand side because the left rooms appear first, sorry, that’s misleading. The IT Help Desk is on the right side, in the lower row of rooms. That is C.
Next, the Events Hall. From C, go up towards the top of the plan, not all the way to the very top, but to the upper middle. The Events Hall is directly above C, on the right side. That’s E.
Now, the Local Records Room. From E, head further up to the top row. The Local Records Room is on the right at the top, sorry, I should clarify: it’s the top-right room, not the one on the top-left. That’s F.
Finally, the Quiet Study Booths. From F, move across to the opposite side of the building at the top. The Quiet Study Booths are in the top-left room, which is G. You’ll notice the Reference Desk and display area in the middle-left room, B, and the Digital Studio below that on the left, D, but those aren’t the stops we’re focusing on today.
That’s everything I needed to cover. Any questions?
