Part 2: You will hear a talk about a new service in a park and where facilities will be placed.
SPEAKER: Good evening everyone and thanks for coming. I am going to explain the plan for the Cooling Point Centre at Ashwick Park during heatwaves. The aim is simple. We want a safe place where people can cool down, refill water, and get basic support during the hottest parts of the day. We chose Ashwick Park for two main reasons. First, several bus routes stop nearby, so people can get here without driving. Second, many older residents live within walking distance, and the route is straightforward without difficult crossings. We did consider other places, including a sports hall, but for a short term heatwave response this location will work best.
We have received a lot of feedback from residents. Two parts of the plan were mentioned repeatedly in a positive way. People liked the shaded seating areas because it means visitors can rest without standing in direct sun. They also supported longer opening hours into the evening, because the heat often stays high after work time and not everyone can come in the middle of the day.
Now please look at the map. The park has two entrances. The North Gate is at the top and the South Gate is at the bottom. The lake is in the northern part of the park. On the left outside the park you can see the Old Library, and on the right there is a path leading out to the bus stop. The main path runs up from the South Gate to the centre, where it meets the path that crosses towards the bus stop. There is also a curved path beside the lake on the west side.
I will describe where each service point will be located so it is easy to find. First, the quiet room will be placed just inside the North Gate on the right hand side of the main path. We want this close to the entrance but away from the busier paths around the lake. Next, the information counter will be at the main junction in the centre of the park where the paths meet. This is the best place for directions and updates because everyone passes through that area at some point.
The first aid desk will be below the lake but not right beside the water. It will be placed on the main north south path between the South Gate and the central junction, in the open area beneath the lake. The water refill station will be on the east side, close to the exit that leads to the bus stop. That way people arriving by bus can fill bottles immediately and people leaving can do the same.
For younger visitors, the children’s play zone will be beside the lake on the west side, on the curved path. There is shade there and the space is open enough to keep things safe. Finally, volunteer check in will be at the South Gate, just inside the entrance on the left. Volunteers will arrive at different times, so this keeps the process clear and avoids blocking the main junction.
That covers the layout. We will now take questions about staffing, water supply, and opening times.
