Part 1: You will hear a telephone conversation between a customer and a rental agent about booking a winter cabin.
NATHAN: Good afternoon, Somerset Holiday Rentals. How can I help you today?
CHLOE: Hello. I’m looking to book a cabin for a short winter holiday. Do you have anything available soon?
NATHAN: We certainly do. Are you looking for a particular area? We have properties near the village center, and a few further out in the valley.
CHLOE: We want something quiet, away from the main roads. Ideally, a property that overlooks the lake. We don’t mind driving into town.
NATHAN: Excellent choice. Now, how many people will be staying in the cabin?
CHLOE: Just my immediate family. My husband, myself, and our two children. So that makes four of us altogether.
NATHAN: Great. I’ll filter our search for a four-person cabin. Are there any specific features you need?
CHLOE: My husband loves cooking, so a large kitchen is nice. But our only absolute requirement is a balcony. We love sitting outside with our coffee.
NATHAN: Got it. I’m looking at Oakwood Lodge right now. It has a beautiful wooden deck. When were you hoping to arrive?
CHLOE: We were initially thinking of mid-February, but the kids actually have a break earlier. Can we check availability for January instead?
NATHAN: Let me check. Yes, Oakwood Lodge is free that week. Shall I take your details to hold the booking?
CHLOE: Please do. My first name is Chloe.
NATHAN: And your surname, Chloe?
CHLOE: It’s Preston.
NATHAN: Is that spelled P-R-E-S-T-O-N?
CHLOE: Yes, that’s correct.
NATHAN: Thank you. And your current home address for the invoice?
CHLOE: It’s 53 Madison Avenue. Let me spell the street name. That’s B-R-A-M-P-T-O-N… oh sorry, my mind went blank, that’s my old address! The new one is M-A-D-I-S-O-N.
NATHAN: Got it. Are you bringing any animals? Dogs aren’t permitted here due to local wildlife rules.
CHLOE: We don’t own a dog. We do have a cat, though, and we usually take him on trips. Is that an issue?
NATHAN: No, that’s absolutely fine. They only restrict larger animals.
CHLOE: Perfect. Now, do you provide winter sports gear, or should we bring our own equipment?
NATHAN: We have a partner shop next door. They offer snowboards, sleds, and skis for all ages.
CHLOE: Excellent. We will definitely need skis for the older children. We can sort out sizes when we arrive.
NATHAN: Not a problem. Just one more thing. The heating and basic bedding are included, but if you want extra firewood for the stove, there is a small additional charge.
CHLOE: That’s fine, we will use the fireplace every evening. I’ll add that to the package.
NATHAN: Fantastic. I will lock in the booking. Would you like your final confirmation details sent by email or by post?
CHLOE: My email has been acting up, so please send them by post.
NATHAN: No problem, I’ll mail those documents out today.
