Part 1: You will hear a woman calling a repair studio to arrange a check-up service for her sewing machine.
RECEPTIONIST: StitchWorks Studio, good morning.
WOMAN: Hello. I’d like to arrange a service for my sewing machine, please.
RECEPTIONIST: Certainly. Is it an urgent repair or a routine check?
WOMAN: More of a check-up. It still sews, but it’s been noisy and the stitching looks uneven.
RECEPTIONIST: Right. Before I take details, can I confirm what you’ll bring? Please bring the machine, in a bag or box, and the manual if you have it.
WOMAN: The instruction book, yes.
RECEPTIONIST: And if you have one, bring a spare bobbin. It isn’t essential, but it helps us test.
WOMAN: OK.
RECEPTIONIST: Great. What’s your surname?
WOMAN: Ketteridge.
RECEPTIONIST: Could you spell that for me?
WOMAN: K-E-T-T-E-R-I-D-G-E.
RECEPTIONIST: Thank you. And the brand?
WOMAN: It’s a Janome.
RECEPTIONIST: Is that spelt J-A-N-O-M-E?
WOMAN: Yes, that’s right.
RECEPTIONIST: What happens when you use it?
WOMAN: There’s a loud clicking noise when I start.
RECEPTIONIST: Clicking, yes. We offer two options. The same-day check-up is twenty-five pounds and covers inspection, testing and minor adjustments.
WOMAN: That sounds suitable.
RECEPTIONIST: The full service takes three to four days and costs fifty-nine pounds. That includes cleaning, oiling and setting the thread tension.
WOMAN: I’ll begin with the check-up, then.
RECEPTIONIST: No problem. If we find it needs more work, we’ll call you first.
WOMAN: Good. Are there parts that might need replacing?
RECEPTIONIST: Occasionally. The drive belt can wear, and sometimes the internal LED light fails. Those are optional extras and we’d quote you.
WOMAN: Right.
RECEPTIONIST: One more thing: we can’t repair damage caused by water, for example if a machine has been stored somewhere damp.
WOMAN: Mine hasn’t.
RECEPTIONIST: Could I take a contact number?
WOMAN: Yes, it’s 07826 904771.
RECEPTIONIST: Thank you. We’re on Alder Street, opposite Artos Cinema, with level access at the door. If you use special needles, put one in the box for testing.
WOMAN: Great, I will.
RECEPTIONIST: When would you like to drop it off?
WOMAN: Thursday morning, if possible.
RECEPTIONIST: We’re closed on Thursdays, not Thursday but Friday.
WOMAN: Friday works.
RECEPTIONIST: For the same-day check, collection is not at lunchtime but after three o’clock.
WOMAN: After three, understood.
RECEPTIONIST: Just so you know, we accept card only, not cash, at the counter. There’s a small ramp and a bell if you need assistance. Parking is available behind the bakery for fifteen minutes.
RECEPTIONIST: We’ll text you when it’s ready. See you Friday.
WOMAN: Thanks. Bye.
