Part 1: You will hear a conversation between a computer technician and a customer.
TINA: Good morning, Tech Fix. How can I help you today?
MARK: Hi there. My laptop’s been playing up recently, and it really needs a service. The fan’s making an absolutely terrible noise.
TINA: I can certainly help you with that. Let’s get a booking form started. Could I take your full name first?
MARK: Yes, of course. My name’s Mark Hendon.
TINA: Is your surname spelled H-E-N-D-E-N?
MARK: It’s close, but it’s with an ‘O’ – H-E-N-D-O-N.
TINA: Got it, thank you. What’s your current home address, Mark?
MARK: I recently moved, so I’m now living at 42 Kendal Street.
TINA: Let me check I’ve got that right. Is that K-E-N-D-A-L?
MARK: Yes, that’s exactly right.
TINA: Great. Do you happen to know the manufacturer of the device?
MARK: I used to use a Dell, but I recently switched to a Lenovo.
TINA: So, apart from the noise, what seems to be the exact problem?
MARK: The fan’s loud, but my main concern is that the bottom gets really hot after just ten minutes of use. I’m worried it might damage the internal parts.
TINA: That sounds like a clogged cooling system. We can perform a deep fan cleaning. Are there any other minor issues?
MARK: The screen has a scratch, but I can live with that. However, the keyboard is quite unresponsive, so I definitely need a new one installed.
TINA: No problem, we can easily fit a replacement. When would you like to bring it in? I have slots on Tuesday and Thursday.
MARK: Tuesday works perfectly. Oh, wait, I have a dentist appointment that morning. Let’s schedule it for Thursday instead.
TINA: Thursday’s absolutely fine. How should we reach you once the work is finished?
MARK: I can’t answer my phone while I’m at work, so sending a text would be much better.
TINA: That’s fine. Just so you know, our workshop has recently moved. We’re no longer opposite the bank. You’ll now find our storefront right next to the florist.
MARK: Oh, I know exactly where that is. How long do you think the repair will take?
TINA: Usually, a standard cleaning takes thirty minutes, but since we’re installing hardware too, please allow forty minutes.
MARK: That sounds reasonable. Finally, could you give me a rough idea of the cost?
TINA: Our standard fan cleaning is £35, but combining that with the new hardware, the final total will be £75.
MARK: That’s absolutely fine with me. Thanks for your help.
