Part 1: You will hear a young woman phoning a friend who works for an airline to ask for advice about getting a job.
Ellie: First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5 on page 2.
Ellie: Thank you.
Ellie: You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
Ellie: On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(Conversation Example)
Ellie: Hello?
Ellie: Oh hello, this is Ellie Fisher.
Ellie: We were at school together.
Greg: Oh, hi Ellie.
Greg: How are you?
Greg: What are you doing these days?
Ellie: Well, actually, I’m looking for a job, and I was wondering about applying to an airline.
Ellie: You know, looking after the passengers.
Ellie: And I heard you’re doing something like that.
Greg: Yeah, I’m working as a cabin crew attendant.
(End of Example)
Ellie: The job mentioned is a cabin crew attendant, so attendant has been written in the space.
Ellie: Now we
shall begin.
Ellie: You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
Ellie: Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.
Ellie: Hello?
Ellie: Oh, hello.
Ellie: This is Ellie Fisher.
Ellie: Right, so what does that involve?
Greg: Well, you might have to give them the initial safety demonstration before takeoff, for example.
Greg: You’ve probably seen that when you’ve made a journey by air.
Ellie: Actually, I’ve never flown.
Ellie: But I’d love to.
Ellie: That’s why I’d like a job with an airline.
Greg: Oh, right.
Greg: And during the flight, you’d also be going round to see if anyone wants to buy anything.
Ellie: So, I’d be dealing with money.
Greg: That’s right, you’d be responsible for that, and then of course you’d be serving meals and snacks and things.
Ellie: Okay, so can anyone apply?
Greg: Well, there are certain requirements.
Greg: You must be at least 19 years old and there’s also a minimum height that’s 168 centimetres.
Greg: That’s to make sure you can reach the higher cupboards in the plane.
Ellie: Right.
Ellie: I’m a hundred and sixty-nine centimetres, I think.
Ellie: What about qualifications?
Greg: You need to show that you have a good level of English that’s written and spoken and also maths.
Ellie: Okay, well, I passed my exams in both those subjects, fortunately.
Greg: And it’s an advantage if you can speak another language, although for cabin crew it’s not essential.
Ellie: I can speak Spanish.
Ellie: I did that at school until I was 16.
Greg: Excellent.
Greg: That’ll be very useful.
Ellie: And I’m pretty fit.
Ellie: I don’t have any medical problems.
Greg: Okay.
Greg: Oh, and can you swim?
Ellie: Yes.
Greg: Good, because that’s another requirement.
Ellie: Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6-10 on page 2.
Ellie: Thank you.
Ellie: Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
Greg: Now, if you’re accepted, you’ll get a six-week training course.
Ellie: Right.
Greg: So, that’ll cover all aspects of the job, all the basic things you need to know, and then some special things, like what action to take if a passenger suddenly has some sort of illness while you’re in the air, for example.
Ellie: Right.
Ellie: I suppose you can’t always count on a doctor being on board.
Greg: No.
Greg: And then you’ll have to do a lot of work during the training on becoming aware of the variety of cultures that your passengers may come from, and the implications of that.
Ellie: That’s really interesting actually.
Greg: Okay.
Ellie: Well, I’d definitely like to apply.
Ellie: Um, what airline do you actually work for?
Greg: It’s a small airline called Urantas.
Greg: That’s E-U-R-O-N-T-A-S.
Ellie: Is that N or M in the middle?
Greg: N for November.
Ellie: Okay.
Greg: They’re good people to work for.
Greg: Have a look at their website.
Greg: You can download the application form from there.
Ellie: Right.
Ellie: I don’t have much in the way of experience, though.
Greg: Well, what have you done since leaving school?
Ellie: I worked in a supermarket for a bit on the information desk.
Ellie: I was helping deal with queries from customers.
Greg: Okay, put that down, that’s one of the most important aspects of the job in fact.
Ellie: Oh right.
Ellie: And last year I also did some voluntary work as part of a team.
Ellie: Should I put that down too?
Greg: Of course, that’s something else they’ll be looking for, being able to work with others.
Ellie: Right!
Greg: And a lot of airlines expect you to pay for your own uniform, but the good thing about this airline is that they provide it for you.
Ellie: Great.
Ellie: Well, thanks so much, Greg.
Ellie: That is the end of section 1.
Ellie: You now have half a minute to check your answers.
Ellie: Now turn to section 2 on page 3.
