Part 1: You will hear a conversation about a placement at the Campus Data Lab.
Administrator: Hello. Are you here for the Campus Data Lab placement. Student: Yes. I’m starting today. Administrator: Great. I’m Dr Harris. H A R R I S. Dr Harris. I supervise the placement students in this lab. Before you begin, we have a short routine to keep things organised, and it also helps with safety because the space gets busy. Student: Sure. Administrator: First, please keep drinks out of the work areas, and wash your hands before touching any devices. We have equipment that is shared, so we try to keep the surfaces clean. Student: Okay. No drinks in the work areas. Administrator: Good. Now come to reception and see Laila. She’ll ask for your student number. That’s how we log you in for building access and printing. Student: I have it written down. Administrator: Perfect. Laila will also give you a visitor pass. Wear it on your jacket so security can see it quickly. Student: Where do we meet for the briefing? Administrator: We meet in the small room with glass walls opposite the stairs. We start on time, so try to arrive a minute or two early. Student: Opposite the stairs. Got it. Administrator: If you need me during the day, call extension 410. It rings on my desk phone, so I usually answer quickly. Student: Extension 410. Got it. Administrator: Good. Now, I’ll tell you what you’ll help with today. It’s mostly simple tasks so you can learn the space. On the Device Shelf, please check labels on the tablets and plug them in to charge. Use the USB cable with the blue tag. Those cables match the tablets we use for surveys. At the Print Point, refill paper and clear the output tray, but don’t move the printer. It’s heavy and it’s connected to the network by a fixed cable. In the Quiet Booths, wipe desks and tidy chairs, and keep voices low. People record audio there. Finally, in the Meeting Room, set out water and update the schedule on the wall so everyone knows which groups are booked. Administrator: If anything is unclear, ask Laila before you start and we’ll point you in the right direction. Student: Great. Thanks.
