Part 2: You will hear a community manager talking to new residents about the rules at a tiny house settlement.
MANAGER: Welcome, everyone! I am the manager here at Alderwood Micro-Living. It is absolutely fantastic to see all of you looking so eager and ready to join our growing tiny house settlement today. Before you officially unpack your boxes and move in, I need to take a few minutes to run through some core community rules.
Let’s start with vehicles. Space is quite tight around the cabins, so you can’t park right next to your front door. All residents’ cars must be left in the gravel lot at the main entrance. You’ll just have a short, pleasant walk to your home from there.
Next is waste management. We provide large communal bins behind the main hall. You absolutely have to separate your recyclable items from your everyday rubbish. If the collection crew finds you’ve mixed them up, we get penalized. We pass that straight onto you with a fine of 40 dollars. So please, sort everything carefully.
Now, about outdoor fires. Making a fire directly on the bare ground is strictly forbidden due to wildland fire risks in this region. You’re welcome to have a cozy fire in the evenings, but only if you use a portable firepit. We sell them right at the front office if you need one.
For those bringing pets, we have a strict policy to ensure everyone’s comfort. Even if your animal is incredibly friendly, they must be kept on a leash the entire time they are outside your tiny house. They cannot roam freely around the pathways.
Living in tiny homes means we are close together, and sound travels easily through the walls. Because of this, our daily quiet hours begin at exactly 9 pm. After that time, no loud music or outdoor gatherings are permitted anywhere on the grounds.
Let’s move on to general property rules. Many folks want to add a small deck to their tiny house. You don’t have to hire a certified contractor for this; building it yourself using materials from any supplier is totally fine. But before you begin, you must get approval from the committee. We just need to ensure your plans fit our design guidelines.
If your home will be empty for more than a month while you travel, there’s a set procedure. Don’t worry about shutting off your power supply, we monitor grids centrally. We don’t ask you to leave a spare key with my office either. What you must do is arrange for someone to check the property. A neighbour walking around outside once a week is perfect.
Regarding the shared community garden, you’re not restricted to planting just vegetables; flowers are welcome too. You don’t need to put communal tools back in the shed immediately after using them, just by sunset is fine. The main rule here is that individual plots are assigned on a yearly basis. We shuffle them every spring to be fair.
Finally, let’s talk about our shared facilities. The washing machines in the laundry block operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The same goes for the outdoor barbecue area. However, if you’re hoping to stretch out in the yoga studio, you absolutely must book it in advance through our app.
