Part 1: You will hear a phone conversation between a resident and a council transport officer.
OFFICER: City Council Transport Office. RESIDENT: Hello. I’m calling because our street will be closed next week, and I need a temporary parking permit. OFFICER: Of course. We can arrange that. You’ll need to collect the permit from our office near the station. RESIDENT: Near the station, right. Is it the building beside the bus stops? OFFICER: Yes, that’s the one. When you arrive, please use the rear entrance; the front doors are for customer services. RESIDENT: Rear entrance, understood. OFFICER: Also, try to come before 2 p.m. The permit desk closes at 3 p.m., and it’s quicker earlier in the afternoon. RESIDENT: Before two o’clock. I’ll aim for lunchtime. OFFICER: Great. I’ll take a few details now. What’s your car registration number? RESIDENT: It’s LM42 ZRG. OFFICER: Thank you. And your postcode, please? RESIDENT: KT6 8NP. OFFICER: Perfect. That matches our area. Payment can be made by card or cash when you collect the permit. RESIDENT: Card or cash, fine. Is there anything I should bring with me? OFFICER: Please bring a photo ID and, if possible, a document showing your address, such as a recent bill. RESIDENT: OK, I can do that. OFFICER: Once you receive the permit, display it clearly on your windscreen, so enforcement officers can see it. RESIDENT: I’ll make sure it’s visible. RESIDENT: While I’m sorting this out, where can I get other things I might need during the closure? OFFICER: Outside our office there’s a noticeboard. You can pick up a printed schedule from it, showing the closure dates and times. RESIDENT: That would be helpful. OFFICER: I also suggest taking a photo of the street signs. It’s an easy way to remember restrictions and any temporary changes. RESIDENT: Good idea. I’ll take a photo. OFFICER: If you need a holder for the permit, the post office sells windscreen holders, and it’s worth buying a pen as well. RESIDENT: Great, I’ll stop there. OFFICER: And at the supermarket you can pick up bottled water. I’d also recommend stocking up on basic food, because access may be inconvenient. RESIDENT: I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks. OFFICER: If you are delayed on the day, call this number and we’ll tell you whether the permit desk can still see you. RESIDENT: Alright, I’ll call if anything changes. OFFICER: No problem. We look forward to seeing you before 2 p.m. RESIDENT: Thanks a lot. Goodbye. OFFICER: Goodbye.
