Part 1 You will hear a conversation at the City Library Makerspace.
Coordinator: Hi there. Welcome to the City Library Makerspace. You must be here for the induction session. Visitor: Yes, it’s my first time. I’m a bit nervous, to be honest. Coordinator: That’s completely normal. I’m Nadia. N A D I A. Nadia. I coordinate the space and I’ll walk you through the basics. The good news is that everything is designed to be beginner friendly, and staff are always around if you need help. Visitor: Great. Where do I start? Coordinator: First, we ask everyone to store personal items. You can use a locker in the lobby. Just choose any empty one. It keeps bags away from machines and reduces tripping hazards. Visitor: Do I need a key? Coordinator: No key. Just set a simple code and remember it. Next, go to the front desk and show your library card. That’s how we confirm you’ve signed the safety agreement. Visitor: I’ve got it on my phone. Does a digital one work? Coordinator: Yes, a digital card is fine. Once they confirm it, they’ll give you an orange wristband. It’s a small thing, but it tells staff you’ve completed induction and you’re allowed to use the equipment. Visitor: Where is the induction room? Coordinator: We meet on Level 3, in the glass room next to the elevators. After the briefing, you can stay and practise on the beginner machines. If you lose me, call my number. 0746 820 931. Visitor: Let me note that. 0746 820 931. Coordinator: Perfect. Now, while we’re waiting for others, I’ll explain today’s simple tasks. We ask new members to help with light tidying. Nothing technical. In the 3D Printing zone, please check filament labels and wipe the printer surface. Use alcohol wipes from the drawer. They dry quickly and don’t leave residue. At the Electronics Bench, return tools to the rack and tidy the cables. But don’t touch soldering irons. Only trained users handle those because they stay hot for a long time. In the Wood Corner, sweep the floor and empty the bin, and always wear goggles there, even for cleaning. Finally, at the Help Desk, refill the paper forms and update the timetable board so visitors can see which sessions are running.
