Part 3 You will hear two students, Hana and Leo, discussing a trial of an audio guide for a local museum.
Hana: The museum confirmed they want us to run the audio guide trial next month. Leo: Great. That gives us some time to prepare properly. Did they say why they picked us? Hana: Not directly, but I think it is because we can manage the technical side. You can edit audio and I can organise the interface. Leo: Yes, that makes sense. Between us, we cover most of the skills they need.
Hana: So we should think carefully about the first version. It needs to be simple. Leo: Right. If it is too complicated, visitors might lose interest.
Hana: Short tracks are better for a trial. We can always add more detail later. Leo: I was going to suggest we include more detail from the start. Hana: For testing, short is safer. We can see what people actually respond to. Leo: Fair point. It is easier to build up than cut things back.
Leo: How long do you think each track should be then? Hana: About three minutes. Not five. Three is enough for the trial stage. Leo: Okay. That sounds reasonable for most visitors.
Leo: What about background music? Hana: I would rather avoid it during the exhibits. It could distract people from the objects. Leo: I still think a small amount of music can help set the mood. Hana: Maybe, but it would not suit every room. Leo: True. In that case, we could use music only at the start. Hana: Yes, just in the introduction would be fine.
Leo: We should also decide how to collect feedback. Hana: An online link is easy, but people often forget to use it. Leo: What about comment cards? Hana: Cards get missed or left blank. I would rather talk to people directly. Leo: So short interviews at the exit? Hana: Yes. That should give us clearer answers. Leo: Agreed.
Hana: Let us think about the different parts of the trial. Leo: Yes. Each area will have its own challenges.
Hana: At the entrance briefing, we need to give very clear directions between exhibits. Leo: Otherwise visitors could wander or miss sections. Hana: Exactly. Unclear directions are the main risk there.
Leo: The sculpture gallery is different. Hana: Yes. The sound echoes a lot in that room. Leo: Too much echo could make the audio hard to follow. Hana: We should test pacing and volume carefully there.
Hana: The basement exhibition has another issue. I thought the signal was fine. Leo: I tested it last week. The mobile signal is actually very weak down there. Hana: Right. Then we will need offline files for that section. Leo: Definitely. Otherwise the guide will not work properly.
Hana: We are also planning to use loan devices. Leo: Yes, and that means we need to think about hygiene. Hana: Wipes would help, and clear instructions. Leo: Maybe a sign reminding visitors to return the devices to the desk. Hana: Good idea.
Leo: I have one more suggestion. Hana: Go on. Leo: I think we should offer two track lengths. A short version and a longer one. Hana: Why two? Leo: Some visitors want quick highlights, while others want more detail. Hana: That makes sense. It would suit different types of visitors.
Leo: Finally, we should think about the report. Hana: Yes. The museum will want clear outcomes. Leo: We should focus on practical improvements for the next version. Hana: Exactly. That is what will be most useful for them.
